The brief
Shevchenko, a small family business from Ukraine, added walnut oil and pumpkin seed oil to its existing products such as honey. For these first oils it needed a simple, modern label that communicates product information clearly.
What we did
Zale Design Studio designed a label with a white background, the key oil and producer information, and an illustration of a pumpkin or a walnut depending on the oil. A grey banner-shaped logo and gold details add refinement while keeping the design clean and modern.
The outcome
The Shevchenko family received matching labels for its walnut oil and pumpkin seed oil. Zale Design Studio had previously designed the logo, labels and packaging for the family’s honey.

Label design for Shevchenko: launching walnut and pumpkin seed oils
Shevchenko is a small family business from Ukraine that has begun producing walnut oil and pumpkin seed oil alongside its existing products, such as honey. As small producers, they chose to launch their first oils with a simple, modern label. Working with the client, we created a label that communicates the product information clearly and helps the brand take its first steps in a competitive market.
About Shevchenko
Shevchenko is a family business with a long tradition in production that has now decided to move into oil. Although oil is new territory for them, their focus is on preserving the quality and natural character of the ingredients. As small producers, they aim to lay the foundations for future growth and a recognisable place in the market, with transparency and simplicity as their core values.
Designing the label
For the Shevchenko label, we aimed for a modern, simple design that highlights the natural character of the product. Our approach centred on three elements:
- Simplicity: A white background keeps every other visual element clear and legible.
- Text and illustration: The label carries the necessary product information, while an illustration of a pumpkin or a walnut underlines the ingredient the oil is made from.
- A banner-shaped logo: The company's grey logo, set in the shape of a banner, makes the brand recognisable. Gold details give the label a more sophisticated feel while keeping the look modern and clean.
Key elements of the label design
White background
We chose a white background for its simplicity and clean look. It lets the text, the illustrations and additional elements such as the gold details stand out clearly. White also suggests transparency and reliability, which matters for small producers who want to earn their customers' trust.
Text and illustrations
The label carries the essential information about the oil, such as the raw materials used and the producer's details. Alongside the text, an illustration of a pumpkin or a walnut adds a visual element that links the product to its natural ingredients. This simple image helps shoppers see at a glance what the product is, without overloading them with information.
Grey logo with gold details
The company logo, shown in shades of grey as a banner, keeps the label visually consistent with the rest of the design. The gold details signal the product's premium character without overdoing the elegance. Together, the grey and gold give the label a modern yet simple look, in keeping with the philosophy of a small producer.
Why good label design matters for oils
Label design plays a key role in how a product is presented on the market. For walnut and pumpkin seed oils, a well-designed label can offer several important advantages:
- First impressions: In shops, customers decide based on how a product looks. A clear, clean label can catch their eye and encourage them to take a closer look.
- Information: The label is the main source of information about the product. Well-structured text and clear illustrations make it easier to understand its key characteristics, such as how it is made, what it contains and other important details.
- Brand recognition: Through a consistent visual identity, including the logo and colours, the label helps build brand recognition. For small producers, this is an important step towards earning consumers' trust and laying the foundations for future growth.
- Communicating quality: Even without overblown claims, a well-designed label shows that the product is made with care. A clear, functional design can shape how its quality is perceived, which matters in a competitive oil market.
Tips for good label design
When designing labels for products such as oil, keep a few things in mind:
- Focus on simplicity: A cluttered design can confuse the customer. Simple lines, legible text and clear illustrations make the message easier to get across.
- A consistent visual identity: Consistent colours, typography and elements (such as the banner and the gold details) help build brand recognition.
- Functionality: The label has to work in practice. It must stay legible at different sizes and on different materials, and withstand external conditions.
- Know your audience: Understanding customers' needs and expectations lets designers create a label that suits the market. For new producers, it is important to come across as reliable and authentic.
Conclusion
Designing the label for Shevchenko was an interesting project that let us work with small producers at the start of their venture into walnut and pumpkin seed oils. The simple, modern label, with its white background, clear text, pumpkin or walnut illustration, grey banner logo and gold details, communicates the value and quality of the product clearly.
A good label does more than catch the eye: it also gives shoppers the information they need to decide what to buy. For small producers like Shevchenko, it is an important tool for building brand recognition and earning customers' trust.
Working with the client, we aimed to strike a balance between modern design and functionality, creating a solution that we hope will help their products succeed. As the market grows ever more competitive, a carefully designed label can make all the difference in standing out on the shelf and strengthening the brand.
