Label design for wine, olive oil and honey — design studio in Zagreb

Zale Design Studio designs labels for single products and for product lines with a shared design. The design includes print-ready artwork.

What label design includes

A label has little space and a lot to do: catch the eye on the shelf, say clearly what is inside and carry all the information the law requires. That is why we design it to the actual dimensions of the bottle or jar, not as a picture without context.

Label design includes:

  • label design to the shape and size of your packaging,
  • layout of the mandatory information you supply (ingredients, origin, net quantity, vintage and so on),
  • print-ready artwork.

For several flavours, varieties or sizes we offer a product line: one umbrella design that changes colour, photo or text for each product, so the range reads as one family on the shelf.

Labels for winemakers, olive oil producers, beekeepers and distilleries

We design labels for winemakers, olive oil producers, beekeepers, distilleries and breweries, as well as food and cosmetics producers, especially small family businesses bringing their first product to market.

Label examples: wine, olive oil, honey and other food products

For Casa del Sol we designed labels for Istrian Teran wine and extra virgin olive oil, on black and white backgrounds with gold details. For the Shevchenko family business from Ukraine we designed the logo and a honey label, as well as labels for walnut and pumpkin seed oils. For Goldcorn, a Zagreb food distributor, we created an umbrella label design for five flavours of filling, with each flavour given its own colour and photo.

Honey and spirits labels

A honey label should feel warm and natural, yet tidy enough for the jar to look valuable on the shelf. For Shevchenko, a family honey producer from Ukraine, we designed the logo, label and packaging for their honey: the path of the bee in flight in the logo is actually the owner’s signature, and instead of the traditional honey yellow we chose gold. What a honey label must include is explained in our article on honey label design. We also design labels for rakija and other spirits in the same way: a design shaped to the bottle, a layout for the mandatory information you supply, such as the alcoholic strength, and a product name you can read at a glance.

How we design a label

First we ask for the label dimensions or a sample bottle and the list of mandatory information. We then propose a design direction, refine it with you and deliver a file ready for the printer. We pay particular attention to legibility: the product name, type and, for wine, the vintage must be visible at a glance. Printing itself is not included in the price.

See more work in the packaging and labels category, and tips in How to design a quality label. The mandatory information for wine and olive oil labels is set out in our article on wine and olive oil label requirements. For boxes, cans and complete packs, see packaging design.

Frequently asked questions about label design

How long does label design take?

It depends on the number of labels, when you supply the dimensions and all the mandatory information, and how quickly your feedback arrives. We state the exact deadline in the quote once we have seen the scope of work.

Do you design labels for wine, olive oil and honey?

Yes. We have designed labels for wine and olive oil (Casa del Sol), for honey and for walnut and pumpkin seed oils (Shevchenko) and for fillings (Goldcorn).

Who is responsible for the mandatory information on the label?

You supply the mandatory information, because the producer is responsible for its accuracy. We place it on the label so it is tidy and legible.

Is printing included?

No. We design and prepare print-ready artwork; printing is arranged separately. We're happy to recommend a printer.
